“Cry ‘Havoc!’, and let slip the dogs of war.”

Dogs are not only man’s best friend, but have proved a ferocious ally in warfare through history. Canines have been deployed in battle for thousands of years, with records showing Persians, Romans, Greeks, and Britons using our furry friends to attack the enemy physically. When Xerxes of Persia invaded Greece in 480 BC prior to the Battle of Thermopylae and his clash with Leonidas, he was accompanied by massive packs of hounds.

One of his predecessors, Persian king Cambyses II, even employed the animals for a psychological advantage over his enemy, taking advantage of the Egyptians’ sacred adoration for animals by reinforcing his front line with them. Today, dogs are still used within militaries, and by police forces around the world.

With the introduction of Barbarian Commander Boudica in Total War: ARENA comes the addition of this brand new unit to the game. Allow us to showcase the Wardogs, which could become your most reliable unit, or your worst nightmare!

The Wardog units are made to be commanded by Boudica, as her abilities directly affect Wardogs.

Wardogs can be used as an ambushing unit, sent out to wait in long grass or forests and hide from the enemy, waiting for them to get within range and attack. Once the Wardogs have charged an enemy, any soldiers that are knocked down become pinned and struggle to return to their feet.

Wardogs are a counter-defensive unit best employed when taking down Pikes and Spears. The Wardogs add a new mechanic in that they can ignore a unit in phalanx and break through.

The Wardogs sub-unit that detaches from the handlers is not affected by the morale system, so they will never rout or deal morale damage, but if the handlers die, the Wardogs will scatter and run away.

This new unit is the only one in the game to have a sub unit that can be released and recalled using abilities. Once the dogs have been released the player doesn’t keep vision on this unit if they enter the fog of war, nor directly control their movement. They are controlled through the units’ three abilities:

Set your Wardogs down at a location where they will wait until called. They will charge to an area and wait, intercepting any enemy units that come within range, and attack them.

Send your dogs out in a brief wild fury; they will return automatically to their owners after 10 seconds.

An intimidating bellow impedes the ability of surrounding enemy units to defend themselves, and lowers the enemy unit’s morale.

Seconded Strays Tier IV
Wild Wolves Tier V
Hound Handlers Tier VI
Broceliande Biters Tier VII
Wolf Walkers Tier VIII
Warg Warriors Tier IX
Fenrir's Followers Tier X

Broceliande Biters

Broceliande is a legendary giant forest in northern France that is said to be home to some of the most ferocious packs of wolves. First appearing in literature almost 900 years ago, the legendary woodland is thought to be the Paimpont forest in Brittany, and has ties to Arthurian legend while allegedly being the final resting place of the wizard Merlin.

Warg Warriors

Wargs are said to be able to communicate with wildlife and connect to animals to create a strong and unbreakable bond between wolf and man. Wargs have strong ties to Norse mythology, and have since appeared in various forms in modern English literature, from The Lord of the Rings to A Song of Ice and Fire.

Fenrir’s Followers

In Norse mythology, Fenrir is the son of Loki and is foretold to be the one to kill Odin during the events of Ragnarok. A monstrous wolf, the gods bound Fenrir, fearing his growth and what he would become. Fenrir’s followers are drawn to the wolf, motivated by their love of violence.
